"Venice at Play: Challenges, Spectacle, and Masks in the Serenissima" (in Italian)

Have you ever wondered why Venetians put a bull on trial on Fat Thursday? Or what the dangerous “Flight of the Turk” really was? And how fireworks, public duels, and ancient rituals turned Carnival into a spectacle of power, courage, and collective identity?

In the year of the Olympic Winter games of Milan-Cortina, we will introduce you to the popular “sports” of ancient Venice, seen as a key to understanding the spirit of the Serenissima. Through stories and images, you will discover a Carnival far removed from romantic stereotypes: a world of theatre, gambling, transgression, and grand collective rituals that brought Venetians together.

Following the talk, the master artisans of Ca’ Macana will give a live demonstration of the traditional techniques used to create authentic Venetian masks.
