SUMMARY OF THE EVENT

PRESENTATION CONTENTS:

1) How and why Venetian masks were used?
By showing famous paintings and old prints, we will present historical facts about the Bautta, Moretta and the Plague Doctor masks.
These were the most important masks during the time of "La Serenissima" Republic of Venice. Participants will travel back through time to find out about this unique Venetian lifestyle when masks were used daily for more than 6 months per year.

2) How traditional Venerian masks are made?

We will give a demonstration of traditional mask-making and various decoration techniques
In a plaster mold, we make the first layer of the mask, using a special type of paper called “cartalana”. Following this, the public will be presented with different techniques used to decorate masks. During this section, we will invite a member of the audience to add the finishing touches to the mask. At the end of the demonstration, the audience will have seen the complete and complicated mask-making process.

3) History of the ancient Venetian Carnival and its lost tradition.
By showing historical illustrations, we explain the meaning of the Carnival, its social relevance and its political meaning. In order to do this, we will talk thoroughly about Giovedì Grasso (Fat Thursday). This being the day that truly captures the full essence of Carnival.
