A HISTORIC GREENGROCER'S There is another sign of the past right under the Ponte dei Pugni: one of the very last boat-shops in the city. You can buy any type of fruit there without spending much. It is a real reminder of days gone by, when all business was conducted on water in Venice. You stay on the bank, ask for your fruit and the greengrocer hands it to you from inside his barge, under the green canopy that looks like a sail. And his movements change according to the height of the tide. One night when the tide was very high I saw the barge stranded on the bank. The next day at low tide it was quite a problem getting it back into the canal. These are certainly things that don't happen in a "normal" shop.<< Back |
